Listen, I’ll be upfront. I was ten when Diesel Boy released their last album “Rode Hard and Put Away Wet”, and I initially didn’t hear it until I was 19. So that, for me, made this period of longing for new material a little shorter. I’m 31 now, so the period here isn’t as intense as many have waited. But still, like many, I couldn’t help but wonder what had happened to the band. With Gets Old, Diesel Boy are back, and the past 22 years have benefited from their break.
If we look at the opener ‘Lost Decade’, it could come off as the average punk song. But they take the piss out of themselves and give fans a sense of what they’ve been up to since they’ve been gone. “Is it a reunion if no one cared we were gone or that we’re back?” and those lyrics are funny.
This quickly became my favourite song. ‘Viking Funeral’ starts with what I imagine is Gjallarhorn, but I’m pretty sure it’s regular horns playing. The lyrics are heavy and could hint towards a break-up that left someone with a heavy heart afterward. ‘Corpse Paint Blues’ is a pretty pop-punk song about some nice coffee shop and dreaming about suburban life. I felt this song was grown up, longing for the earlier years when things seemed simpler. ‘Two Stones’ hits differently. Lyrically it seems somber, and while the rest of the album hasn’t been “light” on the lyrics, to be honest. The guitar solo and the sound overall remind me of an 80s song. Friends, this may very well be one of the nicest album-closers I’ve heard this year.
22 years is what it took for Diesel Boy to return, and I hope they don’t take another 22 years to release a new album. Because this was fun to hear from them, I think it’s a good comeback album, and no matter what they sing in ‘Lost Decade’ I care that they are back! And you should be too! California punk veterans Diesel Boy will release Gets Old, their first new album in over 20 years, on July 28th through SBÄM Records. The album’s lead single “Bismarck” features guest vocals provided by Kim Warnock of The Fastbacks. Gets Old is Diesel Boy’s fifth full-length album, and their first to be released through SBÄM. The 12-song LP follows 2001’s Rode Hard And Put Away Wet which, like the rest of the band’s back catalog, was released on Fat Wreck imprint Honest Don’s Records.

The Vandals‘ 1998 classic Hitler Bad, Vandals Good is getting a 25th Anniversary reissue on blue/white splatter colored vinyl. Amazon is the cheapest place to pick this one up, so hit my boy Bezos up and save a few bucks!
Next up in a long line of reissues announced this week, we’ve got some new pressings of Operation Ivy‘s Energy and the Hectic EP. Two sets of variants on this one: ‘Merica gets both records on clear/black splatter wax (1,000 copies each). Our European friends get more limited (500 copies) “black & white galaxy” colored LPs. Look! Another reissue of a Lookout! Records release! The Groovie Ghoulies‘ Travels With My Amp is back in print for the first time since Y2K, remastered by Mass Giorgini with all-new artwork courtesy of Tom Neely. Pirates Press Records is reissuing the album on “neon green & cyan galaxy” colored vinyl (1,000 copies). Get yours here.
Having recently returned from a lengthy hiatus, New Jersey pop-punks Midtown are continuing to repress their back catalog (they’ve also been putting out some new singles lately, so that’s cool, too). Save the World, Lose the Girl and Living Well Is the Best Revenge are back in print once again (both got reissues last year). Head over to the band’s webstore to get these before they’re gone.

Fat Wreck Chords has repressed two Avail records, One Wrench and Front Porch Stories, for the first time in over 20 years. We’re late to the party on this one, so the limited color variants have already sold out. But both records are still available on black wax and $17 is a lot less than first pressings go for on Discogs. Pick ’em up here.
The Bouncing Souls have a “band variant” of their new album Ten Stories High up on their webstore. Limited to 300 copies on this sweet clear w/ yellow, green & blue splatter color variant. By the way, have you read my review of this album? It’d be cool if you did.

Hello friends, and welcome to this shiny new column where I, Dylan (otherwise known as Screeching Bottlerocket), tell you what new full-length albums, EPs, singles, and miscellaneous other punk-related news snippets I enjoyed the most this month. 2023 is off to a pretty strong start for punk rock, if you ask me. There’s already been a steady stream of announcements coming from members of the old guard like NOFX, the Bouncing Souls, and Less Than Jake; a lot of exciting newer bands are making their mark as well. Let’s talk about it!
For those who prefer to watch a video instead of reading, I’ll also be joining my friends at Punk Rock Radar to talk about the best new releases every month. If you like discovering awesome new punk bands as much as I do, I highly recommend following them on Instagram, checking out their Upcoming Release Calendar, and subscribing on YouTube.
The first album of 2023 to earn the distinguished honor of receiving a review by me is Quebec skate punk band Colorsfade‘s new LP Built From The Wreckage. This album is all killer, no filler in the most literal sense. Extremely heavy favorite for my end of year Top 10 list.
Liverpool, UK’s Mark Murphy & The Meds released their sophomore album Monochrome and it is quite enjoyable. This is a straight up old school pop-punk record that reminds me quite a bit of One Man Army. Highly recommended listening:
What the fuck’s going on up there in Canada? We’re only a month into the year and America’s Hat has put out two absolutely bangin’ skate punk albums. Winnipeg’s One of Us make a massive statement with their self-titled debut LP. No exaggeration, I think this is one of the best first albums I’ve ever heard.
Stanis is a very good band from Italy with a kinda Satanic Surfers / No Use For A Name hybrid sound. Their new EP is excellent; fast, melodic, great guitars, and killer drums. You should listen to it!
OLD SCARS Back to the Beginning
These guys kinda remind me of my fellow Floridians Against All Authority, except they don’t play ska… and they’re not from Florida. Anyway, Old Scars hail from Virginia Beach and their new 7-song EP Back to the Beginning is pretty fuckin’ good. Check it out if you like AAA or early Rancid:
My award ? for Best Single of January goes to none other than the Bouncing Souls. The first two songs from Ten Stories High got me extremely hyped for the record. These tracks harken back to the Souls’ Anchors Aweigh era sound with big choruses and infectious hooks. I can’t wait til Ten Stories High releases in March and I can finally share my review with you fine people. Spoiler alert: the whole god damn album is just as amazing as these two songs.
DROPCASE
I’ve said it before and I’ll keep saying it again, and again, and again. One of my favorite things about my involvement with Dying Scene has always been discovering new bands. My favorite discovery this month was Orange County, CA ska band Dropcase. These up-and-comers fuse ska with Turnstile-ish hardcore and it works really well. Check out their latest single “Accelerated” below, and lookout for their debut album coming at some undetermined point in the future.
Anyone who knows me knows Less Than Jake is my favorite band. Imagine my excitement when I found out they were in the studio recording something. They haven’t announced plans for a new full-length album, but their new vlog series “This Week in Less Than Jake” does reveal it is new music they’re working on, so that’s pretty cool:
On an unrelated note, 2023 also marks the 25th Anniversary of Hello Rockview‘s release. Considering Losing Streak got a 25th Anniversary vinyl reissue in 2021, I think it’s safe to expect Rockview will get the same treatment this year – so that’s something else my fellow LTJ enjoyers have to look forward to.
NOFX announced the first round of US dates on their Final Tour. As far as I’m concerned, the coolest part of this news is that St. Pete, FL made the cut! They’ll be playing different albums in each city. My stop gets So Long and Thanks for All the Shoes, White Trash, Two Heebs and a Bean & The Decline. Fuck yeah! Fellow Tampa Bay residents: I’ll see you at Vinoy Park in September. This should have a fun old school Warped Tour kinda feel (read: a bunch of old punx collapsing from heat exhaustion because a bottle of water costs $10).
SoCal punk legends Strung Out are back in the lab working on LP # 10. I wasn’t the biggest fan of their last record, but I’m very anxious for what’s in store. Jason also has a new album coming soon from his side project Jason Cruz and Howl; we hosted the exclusive premiere for “Good Hands” music video so you should check that out.
AWESOME NEW “BAND”: DEAD ALRIGHT
Montreal’s Dead Alright is a brand new one-man skate punk band. The project is the brainchild of Brand New Lungs singer Louis-Charles Berthiaum. He already released two singles this month (both are great), and he’s going to continue to put out a steady stream of songs until a full-length album is completed and ready for release on Thousand Islands Records. I’m looking forward to hearing more from Dead Alright! For now, I recommend checking the first two singles out:

DIESEL BOY Gets Old
Comeback album of the year? Diesel Boy returns with their first new record in over 20 years! Gets Old is on brand with nothing but fun, sarcastic, melodic punk songs. Standout tracks include “Dirty Dishes”, “The Finnish Line”, and the closing track “Two Stones”, which is a beautiful tribute to the late Tony Sly.
BORDERLINES Keep Pretending
Portland, Maine’s Borderlines release their debut album 10 years after the band started. Keep Pretending is a laid back pop-punk record for fans of The Methadones, The Copyrights, The Gamits, etc. It kinda reminds me of Warning era Green Day a bit, but less depressing. Good driving music.
PAPERBACK TRAGEDY 8!
Dying Scene Band Spotlight alumni / Baltimore melodic punks Paperback Tragedy return with their second new record in as many years. 8! continues where Threeshe! left off with another masterclass in Epifat style rapid-fire skate punk.
THE HAERMORRHOIDS At the Earth’s Core
Listen up, Ramonescore fans! This is the subgenre’s best album of the year. Hamburg, Germany’s Haermorrhoids rip through 16 songs in 28 minutes. No frills, no bullshit, these guys aren’t fucking around. The whole record is killer but my favorite songs are “Time Warp Incest”, “Captain Isolation”, and the title track. For fans of Screeching Weasel, The Lillingtons, Chixdiggit, The Queers, etc.
BEAT THE SMART KIDS Hot Death
Hailing from the windy city, Chicago ska-punks Beat the Smart Kids buck the genre’s recent trends and stick to their more traditional third wave sound. Check out their new record Hot Death if you like Mustard Plug, MU330, or Skankin’ Pickle. Standout tracks include “Twist the Knife”, “Counterfeit”, and “Into the Galaxy”.
WRONG LIFE / PAPER TIGERS Last Words of an Optimist
Wrong Life is one of The Murderburgers’ frontman Fraser Murderburger’s current projects. The band just released a new record a few months ago, so I was surprised when I saw this split with fellow Edinburgh, Scotland residents Paper Rifles pop up on Spotify. The two new Wrong Life songs on here are great, and this is my first time hearing Paper Rifles – their songs are great, too – I’ll have to check out their back catalog.
DUCKBOY tragic love songs to study to (vol. 5)
Duckboy is kinda mysterious, I can’t find anything about them song social media, and I think it’s probably a one man band. Anyway, there are seven tracks on their debut EP but most of them are these bullshit little interludes. The three that are actual songs are pretty fucking good. I’m not a fan of this kind of “Defend Pop-Punk” style pop-punk but this is really listenable. “XXL hadron collider” is a bad ass song.
Making Friends – “Heroes Die”
“Heroes Die” is the latest single from Brighton, UK skate punks Making Friends’ upcoming album Fine Dying. This is quintessential skate punk for fans of Lagwagon, No Use For A Name, NOFX, and all the other usual suspects.
7 Years Bad Luck – “Another Life”
Austrian punks 7 Years Bad Luck return with their first new album in six years! 2017’s Great, Big, Nothing is a hard act to follow but these guys are up to the task. “Another Life” is the second single from No Shame (that’s their new record – we’ll talk about it next month!). This song reminds me a lot of Pulley’s “Hooray for Me” – I dare you to listen to it and tell me you disagree.
MxPx – “Stay Up All Night”
MxPx is one of my favorite bands of all time, so even though the leadoff single from their upcoming album Find A Way Home is a bit lackluster, I’ve gotta include it on my best of July list. “Stay Up All Night” is a serviceable, radio ready song, which is why it’s kinda confusing they chose it as the first single. Regardless, I’m excited for the new record – I think the best is yet to come.
Mustard Plug – “Fall Apart”
Mustard Plug’s got a new record on the way, too! Where Did All My Friends Go? is due out September 8th on Bad Time Records. The lead single “Fall Apart” reminds me a lot of the band’s 2007 album In Black and White. I’m looking forward to hearing more!
Judo CHOP! – “Conquer”
Death, taxes, People of Punk Rock Records putting out killer melodic punk. Judo CHOP!’s new single “Conquer” is an absolute banger. Lookout for the Aussie melodic punks’ new record coming later this year on People of Punk Rock.
Swill – “Delicate Subject”
What’s that? You thought the People of Punk Rock fellating was done? Of course not! They also went and signed a band from my home state, Jacksonville, FL’s Swill. This is the lead single from their new record Delicate Subjects, which comes out on August 18th. These guys simply do not miss.
Marked Out – “Distance”
Bakersfield, CA’s Marked Out plays early 2000’s inspired pop-punk. “Distance” is the first single from their new EP Never Enough. Recommended if you like Allister, The Movielife, Slick Shoes, etc.
The Subjunctives – “Goodbye I Will Not Miss You, You Dicks”
The Subjunctives are an old school pop-punk band from Seattle, fronted by Ean Hernandez from Sicko. This is the lead single from their sophomore album Let’s Try This Again, which is due out on September 16th. For fans of 90’s pop-punk.

LINEOUT Andromeda
Italian melodic punks LineOut’s new “album” Andromeda is one continuous 52-minute long song, and it’s fucking bad ass. Check that shit out below and grab the record here.
RANCID Tomorrow Never Comes
This new Rancid record is pretty solid. Nothing earth shattering or anything like that, just a solid record. Probably won’t make my end of year Top 10 list (not that you care), but I think it’s a lot better than their last two albums.
DOWNSTATER Cruelest Defeats
Anyone who tunes into these monthly columns is probably aware of my affinity for Canadian melodic punk. Quebec City’s is the latest band to come on my radar, with their new album Cruelest Defeats, out now on People of Punk Rock Records. For fans of riffy melodic punk heavyweights like Belvedere and MUTE.
TIGHTWIRE Head Full of Snakes
It’s hard to go wrong with Midwest pop-punk, and Minneapolis’ Tightwire prove they’re the cream of the crop on their new album Head Full of Snakes. Recommended if you like The Dopamines, Dear Landlord, The Copyrights, etc. Buy the record and see them at The Fest.
FIVE STATE DRIVE Five State Drive
Nagoya, Japan’s Five State Drive play super fun, blazing fast skacore-infused skate punk. Their self-titled debut album is stellar. Think Hi-Standard meets Kemuri with hints of influence from Less Than Jake, Operation Ivy, and 90’s west coast punk. Listen below, buy it on compact disc here.
JAGGER HOLLY Rivotella
Not many bands can pull of a 29-song double album, but Austrian pop-punk powerhouse Jagger Holly does just that on their brand new record Rivoltella. I can think of many 12-song albums that have more filler than this thing; it’s a beast! Too many great songs to name all my favorites. Buy the 2xLP here (US) / here (EU).
McRACKINS Wake the Fun Up!
A Canadian pop-punk institution since 1994, the McRackins are back with their first new studio album in over a decade. If you like Screeching Weasel, The Queers, etc. this is essential listening. Stop sleeping on the McRackins and Wake the Fun Up! Listen below, get the record here.
MERCY MUSIC What You Stand to Lose
Mercy Music‘s new album is all over the place – in a good way! Some songs remind me of the Descendents (which makes sense since this was recorded at the Blasting Room), others have more of an Alkaline Trio-ish feel… a few sound kinda like Weezer! “Love You/Need You” and “Watch Me Drown” are bangers. Get the record here.
DON’T SLEEP See Change
Don’t Sleep is the latest project from legendary punk frontman Dave Smalley, who you may know from bands like Down By Law, Dag Nasty, and ALL. See Change is their second LP; if you like any of Smalley’s past work, you’ll dig this. I think it sounds more like Dag Nasty than anything else. Check it out below and buy it here (US) or here (EU).
DAN CRIBB & THE ISOLATED I’ll Follow You Anywhere
Mr. Cribb used to be in an Australian punk band called The Decline (not to be confused with the NOFX song of the same name). I’ll Follow You Anywhere is the second album he has released with his current band Dan Cribb & The Isolated. Fans of More Betterness era No Use For A Name will enjoy this record. A bunch of songs feature Nick Diener of The Swellers on guitar and vocals. “What You Believe” is my favorite track.
ALL COASTED Never Ending Puppet Show
Vicenza, Italy’s All Coasted provides a much-needed hit of Epifat inspired melodic punk rock on their new EP Never Ending Puppet Show, out now on Striped Records. Check it out below and buy the record here.
THE GREATEST SONS When The Music Will End
I was not alerted to The Greatest Sons’ until I heard one of their new songs on Punk Rock Radar’s New Music FridaySpotify playlist. Check out their new EP! 3 songs in 9 minutes, it’s a nice little introduction for anyone else who’s never heard of these guys. They put out a full-length album a few years ago, too.

• Diesel Boy – “Dirty Dishes” – Another song from their new album Gets Old, due out July 28th on SBÄM Records! This is one of my favorites on the record. Pre-order on vinyl (or CD!) here (US) / here (EU).
• Chaneys – “Archangel” – The best way I can describe this is “If the Misfits were a skate punk band”. Moscow’s Chaneys put their stamp on this Samhain cover. This shit rips. Check out their Bandcamp for more like this. Start with the Brains for Friends EP.
• Clowns – “Formaldehyde” – I have no clue why it’s taken me so long to check out Clowns, but I’m kicking myself after hearing their new single. This shit makes me wanna run through a brick wall! Some people tell me they’ve got a new album on the way; I’ll be catching up on everything I missed for now.
• Acid Snot – “Amsterdam” – After going 7 years without releasing any new music, Barcelona melodic punks Acid Snot just released their second single in as many months. Check it out and lookout for their TBA record on Thousand Islands Records and Lockjaw Records.
• Evening Shadows – “Beach Queen” – Eccentric Pop Records only puts out good records. That’s a hill I’m more than willing to die on. So when they launched pre-orders for record from a mysterious new band called Evening Shadows in 2021, I didn’t hesitate to pull the trigger. That record was killer and their new single “Beach Queen” is great, too! Check it out and look out for Evening Shadows’ sophomore LP.
